Nail Guns

A nail gun is a powerful tool that functions in a similar way to a hammer in that it is used to drive nails into wood or other types of material. Nail guns were named so because in many ways they resemble any other type of gun that consists of a handle, trigger, and a barrel. There are many different types of nail guns on the market today but perhaps the most common is the pneumatic nail gun that operates using compressed air. Pneumatic nail guns work via a connection to an air compressor that shoots out the nail and forces it into the wood or other material.

As mentioned previously nail guns are similar to a hammer and have many professional builders and tradesmen have replaced hammers with nail guns. Instead of using individual nails, the nails in a nail gun are mounted into long strips or placed into a carrier coil depending on the type of nail gun you are using. The type of nail gun will also determine the length and gauge (thickness) of the nails the gun will be able to drive. Nail guns have many different advantages over hammers, as they are capable of driving nails quicker and at a much higher frequency than a hammer ever could.

As with any other power tools, nail guns can be extremely dangerous if misused or if great care is not taken when handling one. You should always read the manufacturers instructions and safety recommendations but if in doubt try to remember these simple safety tips:

  • Always wear protective eyewear when operating a nail gun.
  • Never point a nail gun at another person or immediately towards you.
  • Always use the correct nails for the particular nail gun you are using.
  • Always use the nail guns safety device when it is not in use.
  • Never allow children to use a nail gun.

No matter what type of nail gun you are using it is important to remember that you cannot use ordinary nails in a nail gun. This is because in a nail gun the nails are connected together either by glue, wire or thin strips of paper. This connection is an essential element in the way in which a nail gun functions as it allows the gun to keep reloading once fired enabling more nails to be fired one after another.
