A Beginners Guide to Power Jigsaws

A power jigsaw is one of the most versatile power tools that can be used to take the hard work out of sawing and cutting both straight and curved lines. A power jigsaw can be used for many DIY tasks and has proven especially useful for cutting and making internal cuts such as the holes needed in a worktop in order to fit a hob or sink. Jigsaws can be used to quickly and accurately cut through a wide variety of different materials including wood and ceramic tiles. Power jigsaws have become regarded by many to be an essential piece of power tool equipment for any DIY toolkit.

When deciding which power jigsaw to buy there are a few key elements that you should consider including speed, action and choice of blades. As with all power tools, jigsaws are extremely powerful and potentially dangerous tools and should only be operated by responsible and experienced users. The manufacturer’s handbook should always be read before use and full safety equipment such as goggles and ear protection should be worn.

If you are looking for a jigsaw that you may only need to use occasionally then a single speed jigsaw would be a better option as they are less expensive and can easily cope with less demanding jobs and occasional use. Variable speed jigsaws are more suited to frequent use and can be adjusted for use on different materials. However, the quality of the cut will depend on the use of the correct blade for the job in hand.

The blades of a power jigsaw are distinguished by the number of teeth that the blade has per inch (TPI). Power tool manufacturers have found that the higher the TPI, the smoother the finished cut will be. It is important to consider here the materials through which you will be using the jigsaw on as this can also affect the type of blade that you will need. Jigsaws are capable of cutting through light metal using steel or bi-metal blades but work best on thin sheets of material as the blades can often become bent if used to cut material that is too thick.

Other common features of jigsaws include a pendulum action, adjustable base plate, dust bag and laser feature. Each of these features enhances the quality of the cut a jigsaw makes and more and more power tool manufacturers are now producing quality and reliable power jigsaws with high performance capabilities.
